Quick Reveiw: Cakes and Ale

Went back to Cakes and Ale this week for the first time in a couple months. We enjoyed another excellent meal; unfortunately, I forgot my camera again and got a bunch of crappy phone pics.
                                                    
We started with two fresh and seasonal appetizers. The fried polenta with a whipped herbed ricotta and radishes was delicious; the polenta perfectly crispy on the outside with a creamy interior. The crisp radishes providing a nice textural counterpoint to the creamy cheese.


Even better was the salad of sunflower sprouts, roasted beets, and warm goat cheese. Delicate and light but packed with the flavors of spring. 
The entrees were equaling inspiring: The wild king salmon over a warm cucumber, celery & potato salad, with a mustard vinaigrette and purslane was tasty. The skin on the salmon prepared to a crisp perfection and the bright cucumber salad just popped. Also fine was the whole roasted NC trout, asparagus, leek & butter bean pirlau, salsa rustica.


We drank a nice wine, too. The 2003 Arcadian Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard was in a great drinking zone after resting a few years.Tasty, with notes of asian spice and cranberry.

2004 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis

Some of the folks over at Wine Berserkers have been participating in a tasting where each week a different village is focused on, and folks drink and post about the wines. Last week, Gevrey Chambertin was the focus; this week, Morey St. Denis was in the limelight. I played along an opened a nice little village wine from Domaine Lignier-Michelot. No mean greenies this time.


The wine showed a dark and dusty nose with some tobacco and iron. There is a tight mineral spine with austere red fruit notes. A lot of power in this villages. And no greenies! Needs an hour in the decanter to show up. Nice enough and some upside probably. I like it in this range and was happy with the showing.

Dinner at Bocado

I have previously written about a couple of very tasty lunches at Bocado on Atlanta's west side. I had visited several times, a couple of times with some wine enthusiasts including Eat It Atlanta. This Friday, I finally made it across town to Bocado for dinner. Once again, I left extremely satisfied. Great food, great atmosphere, an incredibly reasonably priced menu, and only $7 corkage! If I lived on the west side, Bocado would be my spot.

We began with some nice small plates including the brand new-to-the-menu-that-night-fried okra with pickled peppers, radishes, and sweet onion and buttermilk dressing. This dish was great, but we all agreed we could have used more of the buttermilk dressing.

We also tried the tasty deviled eggs topped with pickled onions and prosciutto. Wonderfully creamy eggness with salty prosciutto and a nice kick of acidity from the pickled onions. These were so good we got a second order. Almost a third, but we refrained and moved on...

Also tasty, though lacking some real punch, was the fresh local been salad with beets, fennel, lemon, chili d'arbol and olive oil.
The table also shared the Tuna BLT and a couple of Bocado's really tasty burgers and herb-garlic fries. 
A vegetarian offering was also quite tasty and perfectly seasonal. 
Creamy GA grits with russian kale, asparagus, radishes, chevre, and a romesco sauce.


It really was a terrific Friday night dinner. I like what they are doing at Bocado and will be back soon. The $7 corkage fee is a wine lover's dream. We brought in a couple of wines: a 2007 Windy Oaks Chardonnay and 2003 Joseph Swan Pinot Noir Saralee's Vineyard. Both wines showed quite well, though clearly Californian in style.

Burgundy: Wines From The "Coat Door"

Had some of the usual suspects over the other night to continue or ongoing exploration of Burgundy. EatItAtlanta was here, as were Rowdyfood, and The Legend (The Legend requires no link; he's just The Legend). I cooked up some of the Caw Caw Creek pork that EatItAtlanta picked up in South Carolina, you can see his post on Caw Caw Creek here

We also drank some Burgs. The wines were mostly good, none were great, but it was still a fun night of drinking, eating, and learning...Some thoughts on the wines:
2006 Blain Gagnard Chassage Montrachet Morgeot-Nice enough.Oily. Full mouth feel. Spring fruits. Slight heat on the finish. Decent value.

2001 Jean Noel Chassagne Montrachet Caillerets-Tough and young initially. Good core of white fruits. Peachy...Slightly hard on the finish. Could use more time possibly, but a nice wine.

1997 Drouhin Laroze Clos Des Beze-Beautiful pinot nose. Downhill from there. Slightly austere, but nice weight that gives way to somewhat green and hard finish. Not great and not going anywhere good imo.

2002 Domaine Tortochot Mazy-Chambertin--Red fruit, but a lot of structure and thin in the middle. Came on a bit as the night wore on, but still not sure about this one. A young 2002 Grand Cru that may just need more time.

2005 Faiveley Nuits Saint George Les Porets-Holy crapping hell young. We knew it, but it was for the sake of research. 3 hour decant and wrapped tight to the end of hell. Allen Meadows from Burghound says drink this beginning in 2015...he aint kidding. Core of dark cherry fruit that will be nice one day...when my kids graduate from college...

Quick White Burg: 2006 Blain Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet

Busy weekend, with not much time for cooking or serious wine drinking. One quick note on a nice white Burgundy from Saturday night. Thankfully, this Chassagne from Blain Gagnard was premox free. Rather reticent at first, the wine took some time to express itself. It was cold too, at first. With time, a honeyed-melon fruit with rather rich weight in the mouth. Terrific overall mouthfeel, but it's not entirely interesting. I needed more cut. Slight warmth on the finish. Good wine, and a decent value in the end. I'd drink again.
