Quick Review: Cakes & Ale, Perhaps Decatur's Finest

Was able to make a last minute visit to Cakes and Ale Saturday night. Tables were all spoken for, but we were able to find a couple of seats at the bar where you can order from the full menu and still enjoy a great meal. We started with the tasty mushroom soup topped with candied pine nut brittle and the outrageously tasty Benton's prosciutto with pickled veggies.

For entrees, we tried the stuffed cabbage and the duck leg. Both dishes were extraordinary, the cabbage stuffed with farro and toasted bread crumbs over creamy tarbais beans and winter squash. The duck leg was perfectly crisped and served over brussel sprouts, turnips, fried gnocchi, and a red wine jus. Both dishes were tasty and comforting, speaking to the season with perfection.

  1. Technically corkage is illegal statewide in GA, for whatever that is worth.

At least C&A has a diverse and reasonably priced wine list. Hopefully you found something you liked.

  2. Diverse. Yes. Reasonably priced? Verdict is out on that for me.
We had a decent 2008 Syrah from Domaine Faury. For $45.

  3. Thanks for the recommendation! My first trip to Cakes & Ale several months ago was a bit of a letdown, but they are now redeemed. Also sat at the bar, and the bartender was nice enough to let me try several wines, ended up a with a good rosso veronese that went well w the duck, and got to taste a Navarro Sauv Blanc that I had never tried before. Good stuff all around.

  4. So glad I didn't steer you wrong, B.
I'm a fan of the C&A, for sure.

  5. Shortly after opening the restaurant we were informed in writing by the city that "corkage" was illegal in Decatur. As you mentioned, we do not want to take any unneeded risk legally. I am not sure why and if we were singled out but we took the note seriously and have to play by the rules. Give us a call when you want to come in next and lets see how we can accommodate you.

BTW really interesting 1997 Kalin Cellars Semillion on BTB now.

  6. Thanks for stopping by, Anon. I totally understand not wanting the risk. Hope you realize I'm a big fan of Cakes and Ale as I tried to express above. Lac of corkage won't stop me from coming back, but perhaps I'll take you up and call ahead next time.
    Cheers.
