Chowing Down at Feast in Decatur

For me, the pound-for-pound champ for Decatur-based bistro fare is Feast. I like Feast; it's an easy go-to for me.I have no complaints. The staff is attentive, they execute their menu with precision, it's a fun space, and only a $10 corkage fee. And as an added bonus...I can walk home if need be (when the kids aren't around!) Don't miss the mushroom chips...yummy.

Field greens with candied pecans, blue cheese, pears, and a sweet balsamic vinagrette. This salad rocks.

Chorizo, roasted poblano and onion, and queso fresco pizza. Excellent.

Tonight we brought along a 2006 Moshin Vineyards Pinot Lost Ranch.
It was just ok. A ramped-up, fruity, alcohol-driven CA pinot.

French Laundry Menu

Had some friends over for dinner Sunday night.
Cooked primarily out of my handy-dandy French Laundry cookbook .

Got distracted and didn't take many pics, so use your imagination.

With Thyme-Buttered Popcorn:

N.V. Heidsieck & Co. Monopole Champagne Blue Top Premier Crus Brut - France, Champagne (5/25/2009) My wife bought this for me, Sat was our anniversary...Floral notes. Pear and hints of butterscotch. Crisp and clean. Delicious with the thyme-buttered popcorn. At Kroger for $30ish.

With Mussels and Sauce Gribiche over Toasted Baguette:

2007 Navarro Vineyards Gewürztraminer- USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (5/25/2009)Just delicious. Nose screams tropical fruit. Palate is beautifully floral, fruity, and crisp. Wonderful lift on the palate from the acidity. Navarro is not found locally, but a great little winery that cranks out delicious whites.

With Truffle Mac and Cheese and Roasted Beets and Arugula Salad:
2005 Kistler Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (5/25/2009) Nose shows dark cherry, cola. Palate is thick with ripe fruit, it's almost too much. Little bit of acidity helps. It's a big pinot. Not really my style anymore, but I can see the market. Costs way more than its worth. Trust me. Save your $75 for shoes, or your kids' college fund. Something!

Sea Bass over Spinach and Parsnips Puree in Saffron-Vanilla Cream Sauce.

2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (5/25/2009)Big and rich. Syrah like. Dark and brooding. Lots of dark cherry and oak. Loaded with fruit at every turn. If you're lucky to know someone on the KB list (my buddy is), these are fun pinots. Fruited up and ready to party.

2004 Château Rieussec - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (5/25/2009)From .375. Deep golden color. Nose of honey and green apple. Loaded with hazelnut and toffee on the palate. Refreshingly youthful, a beauty of a sweet one with which to finish. Good night.

$11 Well Spent--2007 Delas Freres Cotes du Ventoux

I don't usually shop for wine at Whole Foods, their prices are usually pretty wack. But... every once in a while their sales offer some deals. This '07 Rhone blend from Freres is a nice buy at $11. Nice dark fruit and meaty essences. Drinking over the next few years.

Some details: The appellation of Cotes-du-Ventoux sits on the East bank of the Rhone river at the foot of the Ventoux mountain range. The appellation extends across 18,000 acres and mirrors the climatic conditions of the grape varieties of its neighbor, the Cotes-du-Rhone.

Parker's on Ponce- Windy Oaks Pinot and an 11 year-old Syrah

I was pretty excited when Parker's on Ponce was announced as the new tenant at the old Mick's space. An independently-owned steakhouse in downtown Decatur: sign me up.
I wanted to love it, I wanted to shout my approval from the steps of the old courthouse. Unfortunately, over the past six months, Parker's has left me, underwhelmed.
On this, my fourth visit, Parker's comes up...just ok.
They have a great space, they have a great location, their staff is attentive.
But the food, tonight, it lacked something.
Tonight, the pork chop is underseasoned, and slightly overcooked; last visit, it took two attempts to get the filet to medium rare.
Tonight, the jalapeno grit cake with the chicken dish is uninteresting (maybe that's the Yankee in me talking).
The Calamari starter, fried and served over cannelini beans and remoulade, is the highlight.
I still recommend the heavenly truffle mac and cheese! Oh, it's killer.
I'll go back, but not sure it will be that often.

As it was our 11th anniversary this weekend, I brought a '98 Dehlinger Syrah.
I also brought along one of my favorite CA pinot producers, Windy Oaks.

Parker's does not charge corkage! This alone keeps them in my rotation, just wish they'd step up the food a bit.

  • 2006 Windy Oaks Estate Pinot Noir Henry's Block Schultze Family Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (5/22/2009)
Perhaps my favorite Windy Oaks to date. Very light, almost transparent pink in the glass. Slight oakiness on the nose, but also notes of barnyard and smoke. Palate is loaded with strawberry, raspberry, and earthy mushrooms. Loaded, but no hard edges, and finishes with an old world minerality. So glad to have 3 more.
  • 1998 Dehlinger Syrah Estate - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (5/22/2009)
The wine that won't quit giving. 11 years old and kicking. Dark, tarry, smoky nose. Palate features cherry, herbs, spice box. Finishes with a blast of tart cherry.Beautiful, restrained, mature CA syrah.

$12 Well Spent-2006 Chateau Pesquie Terraseses at Ponce Whole Foods

The 2006 Chateau Pesquie Terraces is over at Ponce Whole Foods for 25% off at $12. Good buy for Atlanta. While everyone is talking about the 2007 Rhones, this is a real nice wine for the money. Deep ruby color, dark and meaty, some licorice. Spicy finish. Good for a few years in the cellar. Grenache and Syrah. Go get some.

NYT Article on Complex Wines Under $20

Decent article by Asimov at NYT on affordable American wines that offer some complexity.
You can find many of these around town, sans the Edmunds St John, which is probably the best of the bunch! Sorry :-)

2004 Dehlinger Claret and Turkey Burgers

The Burgers were great. The Dehlinger Claret, just ok.
I'll stick with Dehlingers Pinots and Syrahs.
Have yet to be wowed by their Cabs or Bdx Blends.

2005 Pax Cuvee Moriah

Served this with a simple roast chicken dinner at home. I have a love/hate relationship with Pax. Sometimes they rock, often they leave me feeling underwhlemed. And they aint cheap.

2005 Pax Cuvée Moriah ($50 - USA, California, Sonoma County (5/16/2009)Nose shows some rich plum and licorice. Palate is loaded with blackberry and pepper. Pepper and more pepper. Dark and tarry, it opens nicely with air and fleshes out a bit. Briary finish. Showing well, not an earth-mover, but a nice drink. If I had more, I'd drink 'em over the next few years. A little air and ready to go. Primarily grenache (80%), with syrah, mourvedre, cinsault.
